What does Extraction 1 data look like when exported?

Last updated on 29 Mar, 2026

You can export your extracted data to Excel (.XLSX) or CSV at any time. When exporting, choose the data to include and the format of the export based on how you plan to review or analyze your data.

First, select which data to include in your export:

  • All extracted data – Includes consensus and individual reviewer data for each study, including in-progress forms. Please note that this will include unblinded data which may introduce bias into your review.

  • Consensus only – Includes only data from completed consensus forms, providing a streamlined, analysis-ready export while maintaining blinding.

Next, select which format of the export you need. Covidence has three export formats, depending on how you want to view or analyse your data.

Sheet per section (Excel)

Your extracted data is organized across multiple sheets by section, grouping related data together for easier reading and analysis.

Why use this format?

  • Makes data easier to interpret by reducing empty cells and grouping similar fields

  • Useful for pilot testing and training

  • Supports analysis and reporting workflows

  • Suitable for importing into statistical software

What does this look like?

  • Data is split across multiple sheets within a single workbook

  • Each sheet represents a section of your extraction, including:

    • Study details - Identification data, method data and overall population data (except baseline population characteristics)

    • Intervention details - Baseline population characteristics and intervention details

    • Outcome details - Description of outcomes (except results data)

    • Dichotomous results - Result data for dichotomous outcomes

    • Continuous results - Result data for continuous outcomes

    • Qualitative results - Result data for qualitative outcomes

Single sheet (CSV)

All extracted data is exported into a single sheet, with each row representing a study, intervention group, and reviewer form. As a result, this format can get quite wide if you have a lot of outcomes and fields.

Why use this format?

  • Compare all data across all studies in one sheet

  • Track extraction progress and reviewer activity

  • Can be imported into statistical software (e.g., R, STATA)

What does this look like?

  • All data appears in a single sheet

  • Each row represents a study - reviewer - intervention group combination

  • Each column represents a data field

Sheet per study (Excel)

Each included study has its own sheet, with extracted data presented in a layout similar to the Covidence extraction form.

Why use this format?

  • Easier to review and read data study by study

  • Useful for sharing extracted data with others

  • Mirrors the structure of the extraction form

What does this look like?

  • One sheet per study

  • A summary sheet lists all included studies

  • Data is presented in a format similar to the extraction form
